Later, after sharing a hearty
dinner with the RV couple, Lone Star and Grace pitched their tents in adjacent
campsites. For Grace, tent poles went into wrong grommets, stakes came loose,
and clips misaligned. Lone Star set his up in a flash and sat in the entrance,
watching her struggle.

“I wouldn’t mind a little help
here, if you’ve got the time.”

“I’ve got the time. But you have to
learn this for yourself, darlin’. Soon it’ll be as easy as pie. But not if I do
it for you. Besides, I enjoy watching you. You clean up real nice.”

“Thanks.” Grace curtsied. Her foot
caught in a tent line and she fell. Lone Star chuckled so long he had to hold
his sides.

“From where I’m sitting, Lone Star,
you’re not living up to Southern gentleman standards.” She brushed herself off.
“What’s the Texas expression for
go jump in a lake?”

“What I think you’re trying to say
is that you think I’m about as fine as cream gravy.”

Grace used a rock to pound in her
final tent stake and attached its guy-line. “Yes, that’s what I meant.” She
tossed a pine cone at his head. “You’re as fine as clean gravy. So is my tent.
Not bad for a first try.”

“Not clean gravy. Cream gravy. And
it’s a fine tent indeed.”

Once inside her shelter, Grace was
too tired to crawl into her sleeping bag. She pulled it over her like a
blanket, thought for a second of Lone Star’s blue eyes, and fell asleep before
the cover reached her chin.

Cheerful whistling roused her when
dawn was still a light orange glow on the horizon. She pushed the tent flap
aside and made out Lone Star breaking camp.

“Didn’t mean to wake you, darlin’.”

“You’re leaving? Already?” Sudden
anxiety prickled in her.

“Sure am. Today’s supposed to be
cooler, they say. Still, it’s good to start early in the desert, no matter what
the prediction.”

“Wait.” Grace scrambled out. “I can
pack up and go with you. Quick as a caterpillar in heat. Or whatever you’d
say.” She wrapped her arms around herself to keep warm in the crisp morning
air.

Lone Star’s face shone with
affection. “Just Grace, your coming with me is a sweet thought.” He took gentle
hold of her shoulders and turned her around. “But you crawl right back in your
bag. You’re staying put today.”

Her attention focused on his hands
as he gently pushed her toward her tent. Warm, firm, comforting hands. A sudden
longing enveloped her. She struggled out of his grip. “I don’t need any more
rest. I’m fine.”

“You don’t know how tired you are.”

“I’m okay. Really.” She jumped up
and down. “See?”

“No arguing.” He again ushered her
to the tent and waited until she was tightly wrapped and zippered inside. His
thighs appeared at the entrance as he folded his long body until his head was
level with his knees.

“I loved hiking with you yesterday,
Just Grace. My heart is saying stay here with you. But I’ve got 2,600 miles to
hike before snow lands in Canada.
And my law practice isn’t going to be there forever if I don’t get back to it
as soon as I can. I’ve just got to skedaddle.”

He cares more about his work
than he does about me.

She fought back tears and willed
her voice not to crack. “Okay. I understand. You’ve got your…priorities.”

Lone Star reached for her chin but
she jerked it away.

He let his hand drop. “Don’t be
that way, Just Grace. You’ve got to have a little faith.”

“Faith in what?”

“Faith in us.” He rubbed his hand
against her cheek. This time she leaned into it.

“There’s an us?”

About the Author

Christine Hartmann grew up in Ohio and Delaware and loves traveling to exotic, romantic settings. After a
college semester in Kathmandu, her first three “real” jobs were all in northern Japan, where she lived for almost 10 years. She currently splits
her career between her daytime occupation (improving the quality of veterans’
nursing home care) and her nights/weekend avocation (writing both fiction and
non-fiction books). Her husband Ron Strickland is a well-known long-distance
hiker and trail guide writer and the founder of the 1,200-mile Pacific
Northwest National Scenic Trail. Christine loves reading, pilates, bicycling,
and snorkeling, and health foods that taste like they’re bad for you. You will

Wild Within is well written and engaging. The characters and interesting and the mystery intriguing. The author's descriptions make you feel like you are a part of the action. I am not a huge romance fan and the love story was a little flat to me, but that just might be my personal preference. In all I would recommend Wild Within to fans of suspense/thrillers.

Delusion in Death Review

I love the In Death series. Overall it is one of my favorite series. Delusion in Death was a great edition of a great series. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is faced with one of her hardest cases - the mass murder of over 120 people using an airborne poison. Delusion in Death has all of the aspects that make this series so fun - lots of twists and turns, great characters, laugh out loud moments, and emotional intensity. I definitely recommend this book and this series to any fans of mysteries and thrillers.

Hour Game Review

I liked the first King and Maxwell book - this second one is better. I loved it! What really made the book for me was the relationship between Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. It was funny and real and made me want to meet them. The mystery was full of twists and turns, and the story was fast paced. I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend this book!

Saint's Gate Review

Saint's Gate is my first Carla Neggers book. I probably would never have read it if not the 2015 challenge I am doing. This is a book and author I am glad the challenge introduced me to. I really liked the main character Emma. I liked that she was a nun and how that was dealt with in the book. I found her peaceful demeanor to be an interesting contrast to the murder mystery. I will definitely be reading more by Carla Neggers.

Innocent in Las Vegas Review

Innocent in Las Vegas is a fun mystery that had me laughing out loud. I would definitely read more in this series. Tiffany Black is a blackjack dealer who just got her first case as a PI from an old high school friend. As she stumbles her way through the investigation she uncovers affairs, blackmail, and card counting. With the help of a new friend Stone and a few cupcakes along the way she'll figure out whodunit.
Innocent in Las Vegas is well written and fun. There were a few typos that were somewhat distracting, but overall it was enjoyable and well worth the read.

Mr. Mercedes Review

Mr. Mercedes is my second Stephen King book. It is a fairly straight forward murder/suspense. What sets is apart from other books is the characters. The main character Bill Hodges is perfect as a retired cop given new life when contacted by a murderer. The villain is both sympathetic and repellant. I found it difficult to read some scenes with him because he was so evil, but at the same time the author made me understand him as well. The supporting characters Jerome and Holly really made the book for me. They were funny, smart, and unexpected. I would definitely recommend this book for fans of mystery/suspense.

Dirty Little Secrets Review

Dirty Little Secrets is a fun, quick mystery. JJ Graves is a mortician and medical examiner in a small Virginia town. Her sleepy little town is rocked by a series of murders and she finds herself in over her head trying to help the local police.
I love stories about Medical Examiners. I think it is so fascinating how they put the pieces together. JJ was a good character and the town of Bloody Mary was a great setting.
I found the story somewhat predictable, but then I read a lot of mysteries!
In all I would read more of the JJ Graves series.

Track of the Cat Review

Track of the Cat was my first Nevada Barr book. I would definitely read her again. I loved the location, and I liked Anna Pigeon. I like how fierce she was and how much of a survivor. I liked feeling like I was learning something as well as being entertained. Rattlesnakes don't bite multiple times who knew.
I did feel like the book was a bit slow in the middle and it seemed like there were too many suspects that went nowhere. It also seemed like some of the suspects that were obvious weren't looked at while some of the ones being looked at were ridiculous.
In all I enjoyed Track of the Cat and would read more by this author.

The Woods Review

This was the first Harlan Coben book I read. I loved it. From the very first chapter I was hooked. The Woods follows prosecutor Paul Copeland. Twenty years ago Paul's sister and three other campers went into the woods and were never seen again. They were all presumed dead. When one of the four turns up recently murdered Paul starts questioning the past and what really happened on that summer night twenty years ago. What follow twists, turns, and twins it's way through a mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. I couldn't stop reading it. It was great. I would definitely read Coben again and I would recommend him to mystery and thriller lovers.

Hazardous Duty Review

Gabby St. Claire is a crime scene cleaner who wants to be a forensic scientist. While cleaning a murder scene she finds a new piece of evidence. She soon finds herself in the middle of a mystery surrounded by arson, bomb threats, and dead bodies.

Hazardous Duty is a fun, fast paced, enjoyable read. The main character Gabby has a great voice, and the supporting characters are in turn funny and touching.

As this is the first in a series I would definitely enjoy reading the others. Christy Barritt created a great story with great characters.

Carrots Review

When Shelby went into the grocery store to pick up carrots for dinner she didn't expect her life to change, but that is exactly what happens in Carrots. The wife and mother of two finds her life turned upside down when the grocery store is robbed and she is shot. When she wakes up in the hospital hearing everyone's thoughts and the only witness to the crime it is only the beginning of her adventure.

Carrots is fun, fast-paced and funny. Shelby is great main character who is smart and resourceful. Her interactions with her family are realistic and heartfelt. The adventure and suspense was enjoyable.

In all I found Carrots to be a quick, fun read and look forward to reading more from Colleen Helme.

Hide Review

Hide is a twisting, turning, pulse-pounding emotional journey. I could not put it down and read the majority of it in one day. Hide opens with a mass grave in an abandoned mental hospital. Detectives Bobby Dodge and D.D. Warren are horrified at what they find inside and how it might link to a previous case.

The characters are well developed and intriguing. The changing point of view is very well done in such a way that the reader is completely engaged. I really like Bobby Dodge and D.D. Warren both as lead characters. The best characters are ones that have such great mixtures of strengths and weaknesses.

The mystery is intriguing with lots of twists and I did not see the end coming! In all I would highly recommend Hide to fans of Mystery/Thriller/Suspense novels!

Spider Bones Review

Dr. Temperance Brennan is one of my favorite characters. I love how smart she is and how driven. I love that she is independent, but aware of her shortcomings. I would place her in my top five female protagonists. That said I found Spider Bones a bit predictable. Particularly in the two unrelated cases that magically become related by the end of the book. I hope that the next Temperance Brennan book doesn't fall into this same pattern.

I just love this series of books. They are brain candy and sometimes I need a little brain candy. Grandma Mazur is hysterical - she makes me laugh out loud. The mystery was good with some great twists and turns, and the Ranger and Morelli triangle is intriguing. I really enjoyed in it and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

The Mirror Stage Review

The Mirror Stage is a well-paced, intriguing debut novel. Ada Brandt is college professor who wants to forget her past. When a serial killer strikes a little too close to home Ada ends up pulled into the investigation by a FBI agent who won't take no for an answer. As Ada and the FBI dig deeper they uncover a case and killer that are anything but simple.

The Mirror Stage is a fast read - I read it in one afternoon. I really enjoyed J.J. Stone's writing style and pace. I think I would have liked a little more character development, but since this is the first book of a trilogy that may come later!

I would recommend this book to fans of the show Criminal Minds as it reminded me of an episode! I look forward to the next book.

Under Low Skies Review

Under Low Skies is a combination mystery/political thriller. Martin Billings gets a call from an ex-girlfriend with bad news, his little brother Tim is in a Venezuelan prison accused of murder. Martin heads to Venezuela to help his brother out. He soon finds himself in the middle of political intrigue, stolen drugs, old traditions, new economics, and murder. In order to save his brother, Martin will have to figure out who he can trust and who might be guilty.

Under Low Skies is a great novel. I loved the setting and the mystery was great. Martin was a nice character, although I would have liked a little more depth.

I would recommend Under Low Skies for fans of mystery and political thrillers. Particularly if you enjoy a different setting.

Alone Review

Alone is very different than the other books by Gardner I read in the past. There are lots of twists and turns and at some points I really didn't know who the good guys or the bad guys were.

I found the beginning to be a little slow, but the pace in the last third of the book really picks up and it was hard to put down. Even when it was getting late and I had to sleep it was hard to put down!

I would definitely recommend this for fans of suspense!

Poisoned Waters Review

Poisoned Waters is takes place on a cruise ship in the 1950s. The story follows several characters after the murder of a passenger. Their stories intersect, intertwine, and overlap as the mystery unfolds.

The story is well laid out with some great twists and turns and several plots that twist together in the end. I think my least favorite and most favorite part of this book were the very same thing. The characters are often both good and bad with motives that are understandable if morally gray to say the least. While this may be realistic I really wanted at least one good, moral character. I guess I am old fashioned that way!

In all I would recommend Poisoned Waters for fans of mystery with lots of characters and twists.
