Absolute Power review

So I'd heard a lot about Absolute Power. I expected it to be one of the best books I ever read, and I was not disappointed.
When a professional burglar witnesses a murder involving the President of the United States it starts a chain of evens no one could have imagined.
In the beginning I wasn't completely sold on the book. There were a lot of threads and carracters, and it didn't seem that the book had a connection or a direction. But as the book progressed, as the story progressed, it developed into something I could have never guessed. The threads wove together into something amazing. It was a book that made me cry and kept me guessing the whole time. I read a lot of suspense and it takes a lot to catch me off guard. Absolute Power did just that. I didn't expect how the story unfolded, I didn't expect how characters reacted, and I absolutely did not see how it was going to end.
I highly recommend this book to fans of political thrillers.

Live to Tell Review

Lisa Gardner is one of those authors that I forget how good she is - fast paced, twisting, emotional, and satisfying, Live to Tell is a great book. There are three story lines that twist together and although as a reader I knew the lines were going to merge I could not have guessed how it would happen. Live to Tell is at turns disturbing and dark and then hopeful and loving. I would definitely recommend this book.

How to be a Normal Person Review

So this was one of those books I stumbled onto. I had never heard of the author before, but I thought I would give it a try so I downloaded the sample. Of course I ended up buying the book and reading the whole thing in a day. It was beautiful. It made me laugh. It made me cry. The main characters are wonderful and so developed. The supporting characters and interesting and add so much to the story. At it's core How to Be A Normal Person is about accepting yourself and accepting the love you receive and you have to give. We are all unique and sometimes that seems like a bad thing, but loving yourself and loving someone else is seeing your uniqueness as a good thing. When someone loves you because of your quirks not in spite of your quirks that is a really amazing thing.

Fearless Fourteen Review

I like the Stephanie Plum novels they are sort of like cotton candy. Fun and sweet, but too much will make you sick. The last few Plum novels were just eh. A little too much cotton candy perhaps, but Fearless Fourteen was perfect. Morelli and Stephanie were perfect. The supporting characters were funny, but not overwhelming. The mystery was cute but had enough heart to keep it from being annoying. It gives me hope for the rest of series!

So I read a lot of health and wellness books. It is a bit of a weakness for me. When I heard about The Rockstar Remedy I couldn't wait to read it and it didn't disappoint. While the information in The Rockstar Remedy is not necessarily new, it is presented in an interesting and different way. I found the books approach to health very holistic and realistic. The recommendations are easy to integrate into your lifestyle. I especially liked reading the little rockstar asides! I would definitely recommend The Rockstar Remedy to anyone looking to improve themselves, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

The year is 1984.  I was fresh out of massage school… a ripe 19 years old.  My cousin worked for Belkin productions, the company that promoted Rock Concerts in Cleveland.  One day she called me and said, “ Cuz, such and such, the biggest name in rock n roll at the time, is coming to Cleveland and they want massages. I volunteered you.”   I was in a state of shock, but gladly accepted the offer.  Weirdly enough, I was not nervous or overly excited.   I felt I would be great for the job.

I arrived at the coliseum with my massage table in check, but I was secretly looking forward to the massive parties back stage.   To my dismay, the backstage seemed quite quiet.  All the artists were in their private dressing rooms and keeping to themselves.  I was taken to the catering hall and noticed that there was a completely organic and vegetarian spread.   In those days this was very rare and unheard of.  Whole Foods was not a household name.  I also noticed there was not an ounce of alcohol backstage.  The most intoxicating beverage I could find was Coca-Cola. Wives had taken the place of the groupies.  The Myth was shattered!

 The first artist I worked on was the Saxophone player.  He had the spiritual name, given to him by his Guru, on the dressing room door instead of his real name. When I entered his dressing room, I felt I had entered a Temple. It was lit with candles, incense permeated the air, and a picture of his Guru stared at me throughout the entire massage. I worked with most of the band that night just doing massage to get them ready for the marathon show.  There was a medical doctor backstage giving them B12 shots to boost their energy for the big performance.  Each artist was so thoughtful and down to earth.  I was taken by their humility and realness.  It was an ego-free zone. 

They put on a super 4-hour show that night.  I watched from backstage and I could see what an amazing dynamic a rock concert was.  The band gives energy to the audience. The audience gives love and more energy to the band.  The band gets high on the energy from the crowd. And it seems like it can go of forever.  The only thing that made the band come off the stage was the venue saying that they had to go.

 I will never forget that night as I saw the power of music to elevate the energy of a theater to a higher vibration.   It is no wonder that some people feel that going to a concert can be like a religious experience.  I decided Rock’n’Roll would be one of my religions too!  It would blend very well with my Catholic upbringing.  Catholics revere saints.  So, why not add a few like Jimi Hendrix, Patron Saint of the Wa Wa Pedal; Santana, the Archangel of Long Instrumental Grooves; Keith Richards, Holy Father of the Rhythm Guitar: and of course Our Lady Madonna. 

After the show, that band asked me to tour with them as a massage therapist. I had to say no because I was very committed to the idea of finishing medical school.

I regretted that decision for a very long time.  Luckily, I had the chance again almost 17 years later…

A Killer Retreat Review

I love yoga so this book was made for me. Yoga instructor Kate Davidson heads to a retreat with her boyfriend, her dog, her best friend, and her best friend's husband. Kate is there to teach yoga to wedding guests for a week at the Elysian Springs retreat.
When the father of the brides young wife turns up dead everyone is a suspect. Including Kate. She will have to find the killer before she ends up in jail for murder.
A Killer Retreat is funny and fast paced. At first I was a little confused about the relationship between Kate and her boyfriend, but then I realized this was the second book. Reading the first book would probably explain their relationship a little better. Once I realized that I was able to dive into the book.
I would recommend A Killer Retreat to fans of cozies.

Hour Game Review

I liked the first King and Maxwell book - this second one is better. I loved it! What really made the book for me was the relationship between Sean King and Michelle Maxwell. It was funny and real and made me want to meet them. The mystery was full of twists and turns, and the story was fast paced. I couldn't put it down. I definitely recommend this book!

The Day Before is a great read. I truly enjoyed it. CBI agent Samantha Rose is not fond of her post in the middle of nowhere. A new case may be the chance she was looking for to get out of the small town and into another posting. The case may not be at all as it appears. With the help of ME and fellow agent Mackenzie Sam will have to follow the case wherever it might lead.

 

I could not put this book down. I ended up staying up late in order to finish it. The writing is smooth and the storyline fast paced. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the characters as the didn't resonate immediately with me. However, the characters grow throughout the book and the reader gains insight into the characters and their past. I have to say Mac was my favorite. I loved him!

 

I would definitely recommend this to fans of suspense and science fiction!

The Search Review

I loved this book. The main character Sarah was great - stubborn, smart, and determined. Monty the dog was completely lovable. The story had lots of twists and turns some which I did not see coming. The supporting characters were great and added a lot to the story. (I really want a Galen story now!) I would definitely recommend this book to fans of suspense and thrillers.

Loose Screw Review

I really enjoyed this fun mystery. Antique's dealer and part-time reporter Lucy finds herself in the middle of a story when she and her faithful dog discover a body behind her shop. A flighty friend, overbearing detective, and jazz obsessed employee help her dig into the case.
Lucy is a great character with enough flaws to keep her interesting without being annoying - a balance that isn't always easy to achieve! The mystery was fairly predictable, but enjoyable and I found myself laughing out loud more than one.
I would definitely recommend Loose Screw to fans of mysteries.

Winter Moon Review

Winter Moon is classic Dean Koontz the story builds and builds until you almost can't take the tension. It's so crazy if he wasn't such a good writer I probably would have thrown the book down in disgust instead I read the craziness like I just couldn't get enough. It had all the things that make me terrified.
-isolated ranch
-animals acting weird
-noises in the forest
-dead bodies, or not so dead bodies?
-kids not acting like themselves

I loved it!
On another note and aside from the horror/thriller aspect of the story I really like how Dean Koontz portrays women in his books. His female characters aren't whiney and pathetic, waiting for a man to save them. They fight alongside his male characters. In the same way his male characters aren't all brawn with no emotional reactions. Instead his characters are very realistic and a great mixture of strength and weakness. They work together male and female, both fighting and feeling, to defeat the bad guy/thing. In particular there was one scene where the father, reassures the son, Toby, that he will be safe with his mother, Heather, because she is strong and will protect him. How great is that.
A highly recommended Koontz read.

The Woods Review

This was the first Harlan Coben book I read. I loved it. From the very first chapter I was hooked. The Woods follows prosecutor Paul Copeland. Twenty years ago Paul's sister and three other campers went into the woods and were never seen again. They were all presumed dead. When one of the four turns up recently murdered Paul starts questioning the past and what really happened on that summer night twenty years ago. What follow twists, turns, and twins it's way through a mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. I couldn't stop reading it. It was great. I would definitely read Coben again and I would recommend him to mystery and thriller lovers.

Joyland Review

This is my first Stephen King book and it is not at all what I was expecting. I guess I was expecting It or Cugo. What I got was thoughtful, emotional, funny, and smart. Joyland is part mystery, part ghost story, part coming of age story, and part drama.

Twenty-one year old Devin Jones takes a summer job at Joyland, a small amusement park along the Eastern Coast. During that summer and fall he meets new friends and uncovers an old murder.

Joyland is more about relationships than suspense. King tells a story about who we connect with and how they impact us. Even a brief true connection with someone can have a lifelong impact. I would definitely recommend Joyland.

The Face of Fear Review

The Face of Fear is roller-coaster ride of a read. I could not put it down. From the very first chapter Dean Koontz builds the suspense and tension all the way until the end.

Graham Harris is a mountain climber injured in a fall. Now he has a severe fear of heights and clairvoyance which allows him to see into the mind of a murderer. Working late in a high rise in New York, Graham and his girlfriend Connie come face to face with the killer known as the Butcher.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of suspense/thrillers. It was amazing!

The Innocent Review

This is only my second book by David Baldacci, but I may have to put him on my to read author list. I loved it. I found the first few chapters slow because I wasn't sure why I was getting so much detail about things that didn't seem important. But David Baldacci crafts an intricate story. He builds layers and depth. The characters are believable and moving. The pace keeps building till at one point I had to get up and walk around because I had all this energy from the book!

I would recommend The Innocent to fans of thrillers and political intrigue.

Hide Review

Hide is a twisting, turning, pulse-pounding emotional journey. I could not put it down and read the majority of it in one day. Hide opens with a mass grave in an abandoned mental hospital. Detectives Bobby Dodge and D.D. Warren are horrified at what they find inside and how it might link to a previous case.

The characters are well developed and intriguing. The changing point of view is very well done in such a way that the reader is completely engaged. I really like Bobby Dodge and D.D. Warren both as lead characters. The best characters are ones that have such great mixtures of strengths and weaknesses.

The mystery is intriguing with lots of twists and I did not see the end coming! In all I would highly recommend Hide to fans of Mystery/Thriller/Suspense novels!

Die Trying Review

I could not put this book down. Especially as I got closer to the end. This is definitely a page-turner, and the scene where Reacher is stuck in the cave made my heart pound! I have always been a little claustrophobic and that part was definitely scary!

Die is a great adventure/mystery novel. Reacher is a complex character whose isolation only makes the reader connect more with him. I would recommend Die Trying to fans of Action/Adventure/Suspense novels, and I will definitely be reading more by Lee Child.

Descent Review

One of the first Indie books I read and reviewed was Bloodline, the first book in the Forgotten Origins Trilogy by Tara Ellis. I loved it and posted my review of it here as well as on this blog a few months ago. I was honored when Tara asked me to be Beta reader for the last book in the trilogy, Descent.

In Descent, Alex, her friends, and family face a war for the planet's survival. Alex must find a way to accept her role in the war and as a leader.

What I loved about Descent is the growth shown by the characters and by the author. Alex learns to face the darkness within herself and rise above it. Some characters grow stronger under the pressure while others allow the tension to get to them. The division and connection between characters is part of what makes this such a compelling read.

There were lots of twists and turns, and I was honestly surprised by the ending. Ms. Ellis has crafted a well-thought, detailed, exciting world that engages reader. A recommended read for those who enjoy YA, sci-fi, or dystopian.

Deeply Odd Review

Odd Thomas is one of my favorite characters. He seems both incredibly wise and also somehow innocent despite everything he has done. His books are both comic and terrifying in turn.
I have loved every Odd Thomas book, but the first one, Odd Thomas, has always been my favorite. I think Deeply Odd now challenges that. Deeply Odd is Dean Koontz at his best, with Odd Thomas at his best. Touching, comic, terrifying, and deep.
I could not put Deeply Odd down.

Three to Get Deadly Review

I just love this series. It is so fun. Stephanie Plum is such a great character, and the situations she gets herself into are just hysterical. (the body in the trunk!) I laughed at loud more than once reading this book. I would highly recommend this series. Fun, great mystery, lots of twists, and characters that feel like friends.
