The Chase Review

The Chase by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg is fun. That's the best word I can use to define it. Fun. It's light and fluffy and sometimes that's exactly what you need. It's the book version of the show Leverage.

In The Chase O'Hare and Fox are looking to steal back a Chinese artifact from a former Secretary of State. Their chase takes them across the US and all the way to China. There are lots of twists and turns and the con gets more and more fun.

The characters are pretty surface, but for the book they are perfect. If you are looking for a fun, quick read The Chase is perfect.

Beautiful Lies Review

Beautiful Lies is my first Lisa Unger book. Our main character Ridley Jones receives a letter from someone claiming to be her father. This letter opens a can of worms as Ridley starts looking into her family and her past. Beautiful Lies is well written and intriguing; however, for a thriller I found it rather un-thrilling. The style of writing contained several asides to the reader. Once or twice I would have found it powerful; however, the constant asides took me out of the action. Also the character often philosophizes about life. While this creates some great quotes, I felt it slowed the story and at times seemed didactic. In all I would read more by Lisa Unger and I did enjoy the story, but it isn't a great read for me.

True Evil Review

True Evil is the first Greg Iles book I read. I liked it. There were lots of twists and turns and the story built to exciting finish. I was surprised to find some typos in the book including a name mix up (Ben instead of Jamie). That doesn't have any real bearing on the story but I didn't expect to find any typos. I guess they are in every book!
In all I would read more Greg Iles, and I recommend him to fans of suspense and thrillers.

Winter Moon Review

Winter Moon is classic Dean Koontz the story builds and builds until you almost can't take the tension. It's so crazy if he wasn't such a good writer I probably would have thrown the book down in disgust instead I read the craziness like I just couldn't get enough. It had all the things that make me terrified.
-isolated ranch
-animals acting weird
-noises in the forest
-dead bodies, or not so dead bodies?
-kids not acting like themselves
AHHHHHH
I loved it!
On another note and aside from the horror/thriller aspect of the story I really like how Dean Koontz portrays women in his books. His female characters aren't whiney and pathetic, waiting for a man to save them. They fight alongside his male characters. In the same way his male characters aren't all brawn with no emotional reactions. Instead his characters are very realistic and a great mixture of strength and weakness. They work together male and female, both fighting and feeling, to defeat the bad guy/thing. In particular there was one scene where the father, reassures the son, Toby, that he will be safe with his mother, Heather, because she is strong and will protect him. How great is that.
A highly recommended Koontz read.

The Face of Fear Review

The Face of Fear is roller-coaster ride of a read. I could not put it down. From the very first chapter Dean Koontz builds the suspense and tension all the way until the end.

Graham Harris is a mountain climber injured in a fall. Now he has a severe fear of heights and clairvoyance which allows him to see into the mind of a murderer. Working late in a high rise in New York, Graham and his girlfriend Connie come face to face with the killer known as the Butcher.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of suspense/thrillers. It was amazing!
